Alvin Phua, PsyD

Hi, thank you for stopping by!

I am a postdoc resident in the process of getting licensed in the state of Virginia.

My goal in psychotherapy is to create a safe and comfortable environment for us to work together. I enjoy helping people gain a deeper understanding of themselves and find control and freedom in their lives. I believe that every individual is unique and I would work collaboratively with you to set the goals and pace of the therapy process. My approach to therapy is client-centered while incorporating strategies that have been scientifically validated. I believe in the importance and impact of culture and will be mindful of that in our work together. I have also helped many resolve relational issues that may have stemmed from their early relationships.

I specialize in working on issues with acculturation, failure-to-launch, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), self-esteem, anxiety and depression, spirituality, religious trauma, and family issues. Many of my clients are from the adolescent, young adult, and adult populations. I can also provide therapy in Mandarin.

I graduated from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology with a doctorate in clinical psychology (Psy.D.). I have worked in various settings including community mental health, university college counseling, and private practices. Additionally, I completed my 2000-hour APA-accredited internship at Purdue University Counseling Center, Indiana.

In addition to psychotherapy, I also conduct psychological testing for ADHD and learning disabilities.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and being in nature.
